Weekly Trave Theme: Delicate 11-03-13

Butterfly

Blue Morpho Butterfly

The Blue Morpho is an iridescent tropical butterfly that is found in Central and the northern parts of South America.  This photo was taken in Costa Rica. The wings, when in flight, are a brilliant blue color which is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It was very difficult to get a non-blurred photo while it was in flight, but he finally took a rest break so I could get this shot. The wingspan of the Blue Morpho butterfly ranges from 3.0 to almost 88 inches). The entire Blue Morpho butterfly life-cycle, from egg to adult is only 115 days.
