Ålesund is a town and municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. Ålesund town, established in 1848, is the administrative centre of the municipality. As of 2010 Ålesund municipality has a population of approximately 43,000. Located near Ålesund is the Geirangerfjord, which is typically ranked as the most beautiful fjord in Norway. It is located in the southwestern part of the county of Møre og Romsdal, about 100 km from the town center. The Ålesund and Sunnmøre area has a rugged coastline, deep fjords and high mountains in the Sunnmøre Alps. The Sunnmøre Alps consist of some 30 mountains, all ranging from 1100 to 2000 meters above sea level, and provides some of the best hiking in Norway. The main hiking season is between the beginning of May and the end of September. The terrain offers easy walks, challenging climbs, and everything in between. If you don’t have time to get out of town for hiking, there is always the Norvoya where you can climb the 418 steps to the top and then hike around the park.
