The Tower of London is a mighty fortress that has been used as a palace, a prison, a place of execution, a garrison and an armory. It is where the famous Crown Jewels are kept. The great central building, better known as the White Tower, is the oldest building in the complex. It was erected in 1078 by the monk Gundulph, Bishop of Rochester, for William the Conqueror in order to protect the city.
