Place de la Bastille is the location where the historical Bastille used to stand. The eight-towered fortress with its moat and drawbridge were built in the 14th century.  It played an important role in the internal conflicts of France and for most of its history was used as a state prison by various kings. On July 14, 1789 it was stormed by a crowd  during the French Revolution. It was an important symbol for the French Republican movement. In the center of Place de la Bastille stands the July Column, which was inspired by the Trajan’s column in Rome. It commemorates those who died during the July 1830 Revolution.
