Weekly Photo Challenge: Companionable 06-28-2013

Waved Albatross - Galapagos Islands

Waved Albatross – Galapagos Islands

The waved albatross of the Galapagos Islands will mate for life. So they better be companionable. Each year they will separate for months while they are at sea. So when they return their bond must be reestablished. They are the only albatross that breeds in the tropics. They have developed an elaborate ritual that includes a swaggering gate, mooing, bill-circling and bill-clappering, sky pointing and gaping. The ritual is also performed as they are preparing to depart for their two month hiatus. During our visit in December we were treated to two mating pairs performing the ritual.
