Rotorua Museum of Art and History – Rotorua, New Zealamd

The Rotorua Museum of Art and History is housed in the old Bath House building located in the Government Gardens in the town of Rotorua. The museum opened in the south wing of the Bath House in 1969 and the art gallery opened in the north wing in 1977. Opening in 1908, the Bath House was the centerpiece of development in a resort which was designed to attract wealthy visitors from the northern hemisphere for medical treatment and genteel relaxation. It is an imposing timber-framed building that demonstrates attempts by the New Zealand government to establish Rotorua as a spa resort of international renown. It was erected in a geothermal area known as the Government Gardens. The Government Gardens got their start in 1881 when an agreement was reached between Ngati Whakaue leaders and New Zealand government agents, and was legalized by the Thermal Springs District Act of 1881. The town of Rotorua and an area of 50 acres containing many medicinal thermal springs was created, ‘Hei oranga mo nga iwi katoa o te Ao’ (for the benefit of the people of the world). This was the forerunner of the Rotorua Government Gardens which were developed over many years.
