Utveggio Castle

Utveggio Castle

The Utveggio Castle is a pale pink neo-Gothic castle located on the promontory of Monte Pellegrino overlooking the city of Palermo, Sicily. Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1933. After opening, the castle was never used for military purposes so it was converted to a luxury hotel named Grand Hotel Utveggio. The location was chosen to take advantage of the marvelous view over the gulf of Palermo and the entire city. Unfortunately, the hotel struggled so the owners attempted to open a casino; but it was also  unsuccessful. During World War II, the area was initially used by the fascist troops and then later by the allied troops. Following the war, the building was abandoned and vandalized for many years. In 1984 the castle was bought and restored by the Sicilian Region and entrusted to a private entity for the construction and operation of the CERISDI school of management which is still active today.
