Located in northwest Costa Rica is the Rincon de la Vieja National Park. The park includes the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano which last erupted in 1998. Lower in the park is an area of geothermal activity similar to Yellowstone National Park. In addition to the hot springs and mud pots, you can also explore waterfalls, lakes and volcanic craters. One of the best hikes in the park is the three-mile trail to the Blue Lake and La Cangrejo Waterfall. The trail passes through several different life zones including a dry forest, a transitional moist forest and an open savannah. At the end of the hike, a nice dip in the crystal clear blue waters beneath the La Cangrejo waterfall is a great way to cool down before the hike back to the car.
