Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum reopened in April 2013 after being closed for 10 years while an all-encompassing, $489 million in renovations were completed. This photo was taken in the Summer of 2007 when the museum was in the middle of the upgrades. The Rijksmuseum (Dutch national museum) was initially founded in The Hague in 1800 and then was moved to Amsterdam in 1808. The current main building was originally opened in 1885. The collection consists of 1 million objects and is dedicated to arts, crafts and history from the years 1200 to 2000. Approximately 8,000 objects are currently on display. The collection also contains paintings from the Dutch Golden Age by painters such as Jacob Isaakszoon van Ruisdael, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Rembrandt, and Rembrandt’s pupils.
