Another great photo challenge with so many directions you could go. I narrowed my photos down to three shots showing natural sunlight, three of lighthouses and three of various types of artificial lighting.

The first photo is of the sunlight coming through the rear window of the Church of the Gesù in Rome, Italy, creating a dramatic effect. The second is of the dome of the Pantheon, also in Rome. It was built in 126 AD and has a dome that spans 150 Roman feet (slightly smaller than English feet) with an opening in the center measuring 30 Roman feet in diameter, which provides the only light to the church. The third photo is of mornings first light as the sun rises over the rim of Crater Lake in Oregon.

The first of the lighthouse photos is at  Cabo San Pío (Cape San Pio) at the southernmost tip of mainland Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, as well as the country of Argentina. The cape marks the eastern entrance to the Beagle Channel. The 26 foot high light dates back to 1919. The signal is two white flashes every 16 seconds and the range is 9.2 nautical miles. The second photo is the Tarbert Island lighthouse in the River Shannon estuary in Ireland, dating back to 1834. The spidery cast iron bridge which connects the tower to the shore was added in 1840. The third lighthouse photo is  the Noordwestpunt (aka California) Light on the north western tip of Aruba which dates to 1916.

The first photo in the artificial lighting group is from the the light show as you take the tunnel ride under the Huangpu River from the Pudong side to the Bund. The second is of the Christmas lights at the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley National Park in California. Out in the middle of the desert you will not find a lot of light, not to mention Christmas lights. The third photo is of the desk lamp at the Waterton Lodge in the Waterton National Park in Canada. They attempted to make the lights match the natural beauty of the area. It didn’t work, but we still took a photo of it.
