Intihuatana at Machu Picchu, Peru

Intihuatana, the so-called “Hitching Post of the Sun” was probably the most important of  the many shrines at Machu Picchu. An Intihuatana is a ritual stone associated with the astronomic clock or calendar of the Inca. Every major Inca center has one. It is estimated that it was built between 2100–2300 BC, which would make it the same age as, if not older than, E-ninnu and Stonehenge 2.
