Uspenski Cathedral – Helsinki, Finland

The Uspenski Cathedral is an Orthodox cathedral which was built in 1868 when Finland belonged to Russia. It sits above the Market Square and faces the Lutheran Cathedral creating a face-off of Russian and European cultures. The uppermost onion dome represents the “sacred heart of Jesus” while the smaller ones represent the 12 apostles. the church is commonly referred to as the “Russian church”, however it is actually Finnish Orthodox, which answers to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (Istanbul). Due to its location at the former capital of the Byzantine Empire and its role as the mother church of most modern Orthodox churches, the Ecumenical Patriarchate enjoys the status of “first among equals” among the world’s Eastern Orthodox church dignitaries. But unlike the Pope, he does not exercise control over the individual autocephalous churches, which are fully autonomous. He is however widely regarded as the representative and spiritual leader of the world’s 300 million Orthodox Christians.
