Johnston Canyon, located in Banff National Park approximately 16 miles from the Town of Banff, is a very popular day hike. Johnston Creek has eroded a deep cleft in the limestone, which has been made accessible by a carefully constructed catwalk which cantilevers from the cliff walls above the river to extend the trail into previously unreachable areas. As you make your way up the river, the waterfalls increase in size. You will pass a few small and medium sized waterfalls. The Lower Falls (large falls photo) are 33 feet high and just 0.7 miles from the trail head. The Upper Falls (X-large falls photo) are almost 100 feet in height and are 1.7 miles further up the trail. The level of difficulty is “easy” and its close proximity to Banff means that the trail is usually crowded. However an early or late season hike are a good option to avoid the crowds.
