Copper Dome

Temppeliaukio Church, also known as “Church in the Rock”, was blasted out of the solid rock and capped with a copper-and-skylight dome. The interior was excavated and built directly out of solid rock. The church is used frequently as a concert venue due to its excellent acoustical quality created by the rough, virtually unworked rock surfaces. The dome is made from a 13-mile-long coil of copper ribbon. Under the church is an air-raid shelter that can accommodate 6,000 people.
