Pudong is a neighborhood across the river from the Bund and is China’s newfangled face of Shanghai. Twenty years ago, Pudong was a rambling collection of warehouses, farms and small houses. Then in 1992 the Chinese government revealed a grand plan to turn the area into a global financial center to rival Hong Kong. It is still a work in progress, but two of the most distinctive buildings, the Shanghai Convention Center with its giant globes and the  the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The tower was completed in 1994 and at 1,535 feet high was the tallest structure in China from 1994–2007 until it was surpassed by the Shanghai World Financial Center. But for the most part with its wide-open, pedestrian-unfriendly streets and its lack of street-level charm, Pudung lacks the appeal of Shanghai proper which earned it the mocking nickname of Pu-Jersey.
