Since a new pope was selected today, it seems only appropriate to make the photo of the day of the papal tombs of a few of his predecessors. Most papal tombs that are still existing are located under St. Peter’s Basilica. Approximately 100 papal tombs are at least partially extant, representing less than half of the 264 deceased popes. The oldest is that of Saint Peter from the 1st century, to the newest which is Pope John Paul II, buried here in 2005. Notable papal tombs have been commissioned from sculptors such as Michelangelo, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Alessandro Algardi.
