Christmas Iguanas - Galapagos Islands

Christmas Iguanas – Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos marine iguana is the world’s only truly marine lizard. They live on every island in the archipelago. You can get very close, if you move slowly,  and they love to pose for photos. But you might not want to get too close because they might sneeze on you. Actually, it is not a sneeze or a defense mechanism. They eject two fine plumes of spray from their nostrils to rid their bodies of the sea salt they have ingested, in order to prevent dehydration. If you visit in December, you will see the green and red iguanas, known as the “Christmas” iguana.
