The Louvre - Paris, France

The Louvre – Paris, France

In the center of the courtyard of the Louvre is glass pyramid designed by world famous architect I.M. Pei. The addition of the pyramid was the first step in the transformation of the Louvre, both inside and out, which was started in 1981. The Pei pyramid provided a much needed main entrance which the museum was lacking. Following this addition, the next step was to reorganize the collection and exhibit spaces. Over the centuries the Louvre started as as a massive fortress in 1190, then was transformed into a royal residence, then was linked up with the Tuileries Palace. By the 1600’s, King Henri IV opened the palace to artists by granting the studio space. When Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles in 1682, the Louvre was overrun by sculptures, painters and architects. By 1793 it was inaugurated as a museum.
