Tallinn is the best preserved of the Nordic medieval cities. The Old Town is still surrounded by its mostly intact city wall with its twenty-six watch towers. The city was a medieval strong hold of the Baltic Sea trading world. In the 19th and 20th centuries Tallinn industrialized and expanded beyond the city walls. After two centuries under Tsarist Russia rule and 45 years as part of the Soviet Union, the city has been modernizing at an astounding rate since 1991. The Old Town is now a major tourist attraction with plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, churches, shops and people watching. The top photo is of Old Town taken from the port and the bottom photo is taken from the Patkuli viewpoint, one of the highest points in Old Town.
