Travel Photo of the Day 11-11-2012

USS Missouri Memorial – Honolulu, Hawaii

In honor of Veterans Day, today’s travel photo of the day is the USS Missouri Memorial which is docked in Pearl Harbor Honolulu, Hawaii. It was on the deck of this battleship that World War II came to an end with the signing of the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. The Missouri was part of the force that carried out bombing raids over Tokyo and participated in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The ship was decommissioned by the Navy in 1955, but it was brought out of mothballs in 1986 and modernized. It was deployed in the Persian Gulf War before once again being retired in 1992. It was in 1998 that Hawaii won the battle to bring it to Pearl Harbor and open it as a museum memorial to visitors. From the deck of the USS Missouri you have a fantastic view of the USS Arizona Memorial which commemorates the 1,177 sailors and Marines who died December 7, 1941 during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Happy Veterans Day to all the vets from every war.
