Weekly Photo Challenge: Renewal 11-09-2012

Nazca Bobby – Galapagos Islands

Cave Dwellings – Xi’an, China

Cave Dwelling

Here are a couple of different takes on the weekly photo challenge “renewal”.

The first is of a female Nazca Booby and her two eggs renewing the cycle of life. But in an odd twist Nazca boobies are known for practicing siblicide. They will lay two eggs a few days apart. If both eggs hatch, the elder chick will push its sibling out of the nest area, leaving it to die of thirst or cold. The parent booby will not intervene and the younger chick will inevitably die. It is believed that two eggs are laid so that one remains an insurance in case the other gets destroyed or eaten, or the chick dies soon after hatching.

The second photo is of cave dwellings on the outskirts of Xi’an. Up until a couple of years ago people were still living in these caves until they were relocated by the government to make way for an urban renewal project. The site was in the process of being cleared for a new high-rise residential complex to accommodate the growing population of Xi’an.
