Duomo – Florence, Italy

Duomo Facade

Giotto’s Campanile

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower) is the main church of Florence, Italy. Construction of the Duomo, as it was ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 and structurally complete in 1436 when the dome was completed. The exterior of the basilica is clad with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th century Gothic Revival style. The cathedral complex is located on the Piazza del Duomo and it includes the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile. The Basilica is one of Italy’s largest churches, and the dome is the largest brick dome ever constructed.

  1. I love polychrome marble. These pictures bring back happy memories of my two trips to Florence.
