Lake Lugano – Switzerland

Lake Lugano is a glacial lake which separates southeastern Switzerland and Italy. The lake is named after the city of Lugano and is situated between Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. The Italian-Swiss border was fixed in 1752 by the Treaty of Varese, and has since remained virtually unchanged. The lake is 18.8 square miles in size, 63% of which is in Switzerland and 37% in Italy. It has an average width of roughly a 0.6 miles and a maximum depth of 945 feet. The City of Lugano has warm summers and because of this, in recent years it has attracted an ever growing number of celebrities, entertainers and successful athletes who have given it the nickname of the “Monte Carlo of Switzerland”.
