Old Viking Ship – Roskilde, Denmark

Replica of Old Viking Ship

The Viking Experience

The Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskibshallen) is located in Roskilde, Denmark about a 45 minute train ride to the west of Copenhagen. Vik literally means “shallow inlet” so “Vikings” are the people who lived along those inlets. The museum is located on one such inlet. The ships that are displayed in the museum were deliberately sunk a thousand years ago to block a nearby harbor. They were recently excavated, preserved and pieced together for display in this award-winning museum. In the harbor there are seaworthy replicas of the five different viking ships that are in the museum. If you would like the full viking experience, you can join a crew and spend a few hours rowing around the harbor.
