Travel Photo of the Day 07-31-2012

Olympic Stadium – Helsinki, Finland

Continuing with the Olympic theme, today’s travel photo is of the  Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland. Helsinki hosted the summer games sixty years ago in 1952. The stadium is quite modest by today’s standards. Helsinki had been given the 1940 Summer Games, but they were cancelled due to World War II. It is famous for being the Olympic Games at which the most number of world records were broken until the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. For the first time, a team from the Soviet Union participated in the Olympics and Israel also made its Olympic debut in Helsinki. A total of 69 nations participated in these games, up from 59 in the 1948 Games. Today in London there are 204 countries participating. So both the Olympic Stadiums and participation have grown significantly in the last 60 years.
