Travel Photo of the Day 07-21-2012

St Peter’s Basilica – Vatican City

Dome of St Peter’s Basilica

I have already posted my weekly photo challenge for “inside”, but today’s travel photo of the day is along the same theme. The top photo is of the interior of  St. Peter’s Basilica and the other two are the inside of the dome. The idea to rebuild the 4th century basilica had been around since the mid 5th century, but it wasn’t until Julius II became pope in 1503 that a complete reconstruction of the old basilica was begun. Almost every important architect of the Renaissance and Baroque periods had a hand in the design. The dome of St Peter’s is usually credited to Michelangelo. The interior is space is vast, with a length of 730 feet, width of 500 feet and height of 452 feet. It has a capacity of around 60,000 people.
