Koninklijk Paleis – Amsterdam, Netherlands

Koninklijk Paleis was built as the new town hall during the Dutch Golden Age  and was opened on July 20, 1655 when the mayor moved in to the new building. It was transformed into a royal palace in 1808 after Napoleon made his brother, Louis, the King of Holland. Today it is one of the three residences of Queen Beatrix, who stays here on occasion although she lives mainly in The Hague. The palace is located on the west side of Dam Square which lies in the historical center of Amsterdam. The Tribunal within the palace was once used as the city’s main courtroom and the condemned prisoners were taken from here to be publicly hanged in Dam Square.
