Travel Photo of the Day 06-25-2012

Lonesome George – Galapagos Islands

Lonesome George

Lonesome George

It is with great sadness that I selected todays travel photo. It was reported this morning that Lonesome George has died. George was the last surviving Pinta Island giant tortoise, and scientists believe he was more than 100 years old. A post-mortem examination will be carried out to ascertain the cause of death. Although he was old by human standards, Lonesome George was not considered old for a giant tortoise  since they can live to around 200 years of age. George became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands after he was found on Pinta Island in 1971. We were lucky enough to see George in December 2010. R.I.P George.
