Travel Photo of the Day 06-22-2012

Humantay Lake – Slakantay, Peru

On the first day of our trek to Machu Picchu, our hike was a 1,200 foot climb to an altitude of 13,845 feet to the glacial-fed Humantay Lake. It was good preparation for the next days hike when we had to climb over a 15,253 foot pass. The reason that it was a good warm up, besides the fact we went to almost 14,000 feet, was that every time it seemed we were getting close to the lake there was another long uphill climb in front of us. But when we did finally reach the lake, the view was well worth the climb. After spending a couple of hours relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the lake and mountains, it was time to head back down to the lodge and hit the hot tub before dinner.  Doing the lodge to lodge hike with Mountain Lodges of Peru sure beat camping out each night after a long day of hiking. Luxury hiking is the only way to go.

    • Thanks, it was very tranquil to sit on that pile of rocks and just take in the beautiful surroundings.
