Travel Photo of the Day 05-16-2012

Lorenzo & the Salkantay Valley – Machu Picchu, Peru

At the start of our five-day trek to Machu Picchu, we did a day hike up to a glacial lake at approximately 14,000 feet above sea level. Although our hiking group was small, only six people plus our guide, we ranged in age from 42 to 83. Recognizing that our group not only had a wide age range but also a wide range in our hiking speeds, our trip guide recruited two local brothers, Santos and Lorenzo, to hike with us to the lake. Lorenzo went with those of us who were much faster. We reached the lake more than an hour ahead of the rest of the group which gave us the opportunity to rest, swim (only Doug who was crazy enough to jump in the ice cold water) and take many photos of the beautiful scenery. This is a shot of Lorenzo and the Salkantay Valley.
