Barred Owl – Portland Zoo

Barred Owl - Portland Zoo

On a visit to Oregon, we spent an afternoon at the Portland Zoo. It had been many years since we had visited a zoo. This Barred Owl was a very curious little fellow. Initially he sat on a branch and just looked at us around the tree trunk. But as we crinkled a piece of paper he came down to check it out and gave us a chance to take some great close-ups.

The Barred Owl is widespread in North America.  It is a medium-sized gray-brown owl streaked with white horizontal barring on the chest and vertical barring on the belly. They are round-headed with a whitish/brown facial disk with dark brown trim. The eyes are brown, the beak is yellow and almost covered by feathers. They have a long tail. There is no difference in plumage between males and the larger females.
