Travel Photo of the Day 12-30-2011

Salkantay Lodge, Peru

Salkantay Pampa, Peru

The Salkantay Lodge is the first of the four lodges on our lodge to lodge trek to Machu Picchu. The Salkantay route is considered the back-door route and became much more popular after the Inca Trail became overcrowded and permits became harder to obtain. At 15,253 feet, it has a higher and more spectacular mountain pass between the Humantay and Salkantay mountains. Once you clear the pass it is all downhill for the next two days, through the Santa Teresa valley and the small town of Santa Teresa. The final day of hiking was over the Llactapata Pass at only 8,974 feet, but after clearing the pass we arrived at a Machu Picchu viewpoint, located south of Machu Picchu across the Rio Vilcanota Valley.

  1. Wow, this is so cool! How were the lodges inside? Nice or rustic? It sure would have beat sleeping in a tent! Did you enjoy your trip to Peru? I sill haven’t had time to see your pics on Facebook. It has been so busy unfortunately. There is another blogger I follow called and he just did the Inca trail too. He has some nice posts on it if you want to check it out.

    • Happy New Year, I see your traveling again. Back in AZ doing some hiking. The lodges were very nice and the beds were really comfortable. They also had hot tubs so you could relax while the route chef was preparing the meals. Definately luxury hiking. I will check out the blog.
