Barron Falls – Kuranda, Australia

Barron Falls – Kuranda, Australia

Located in northern Queensland is the Barron Gorge National Park. This rainforest area is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The Skyrail Experience  is an 1.5 hour, 4.7 mile gondola ride which will take you above rainforest canopy and ends in the Village of Kuranda. You can return via the Skyrail, however a better alternative is the Cairns-Kuranda Scenic Railway. The construction of the railway began in 1886 and after five years, 1500 men working with hand tools, dynamite, buckets and bare hands through the jungles, mountains and escarpments had achieved a significant engineering feat. The 90-minute ride winds through the lush tropical rainforest on mountain ridges, over deep gorges and across the roaring Barron Falls. The volume of water over the falls increases significantly during the wet season, but for much of the rest of the year it is little more than a trickle (by Australian standards) due in part to the presence of a weir behind the head of the falls that exists to supply the Hydroelectric Power Station located downstream in the gorge.
