Travel Photo of the Day 12-10-2011

Maligne Lake – Canadian Rockies
Maligne Lake
A great day trip from Jasper is along the Maligne Lake Road. Along the way you will find the Hanging Valley viewpoint, Maligne Canyon, Medicine Lake (which was a previous post), and at the end of the road is Maligne Lake, which is one of the most picturesque spots in the Canadian Rockies. The lake was created by a landslide from the Opal Hills that created a natural dam and caused the glacial melt to back up. The lake is 22 kilometers long, which makes it the longest, deepest lake in the Rockies. It is also the second largest glacial lake in the world. A “must do” is the 1.5 hour roundtrip boat cruise around the deep azure color lake with awesome views of the surrounding mountain range and a stop at Spirit Island.
