Green Sea Turtle – Galapagos Islands

Green Sea Turtles are abundant in the waters of the Galapagos Islands. The males spend their entire life at sea, while the females return to shore only to lay their eggs. After sundown they haul themself up the beach and dig a pit above the high water mark with their flippers. The entire process can take hours and after covering the eggs she returns to the sea. Incubation relies entirely on the heat of the sun. The parents never know or have contact with their offspring.
