Travel Photo of the Day 10-17-2011

Yellow-crowned Night Heron – Galapagos Islands

The yellow-crowned night heron found in the Galapagos Islands is different enough from members of the same family that are found on the mainland that they are classified as a distinct Galapagos subspecies, which indicates they have been in the Galapagos for a long time. It is a nocturnal hunter that shelters under lava overhangs during the day. I was able to get within a few feet of this guy to get some great close-up photos.

  1. Great shot. The Galapagos Islands are way up on my list of places to visit.
