Travel Photo of the Day 9-18-2011

Waved Albatross – Galapagos Islands

Talk about a bad hair day! This juvenile waved albatross is in the process of moulting into adult plumage. While going through those awkward teenage years, it looks like a mohawk is the “in” look for a young albatross. Not yet old enough to mate for life, this youngster was standing alone watching two older mating pairs go through their elaborate ritual that includes a swaggering gait, mooing, bill-circling and -clappering, sky pointing and gaping. No doubt he was trying to pick up a few pointers that he could use when he gets older. Either that or he was trying to figure out what we were all standing around looking at.
