Oktoberfest – Munich, Germany

Today is the first day of Oktoberfest 2011 in Munich. If you have never been and you like beer, Oktoberfest in Munich is a must. We had just spent three weeks touring central Europe, visiting Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria and ended our tour back in Frankfurt. But we had timed our trip so that we could go to Oktoberfest in Munich. So we rented a car and headed back south to Munich to join in the festivities. Along the way we stopped at the town outside of Frankfurt where I was born. My dad was in the service and mom went to Germany with him. My parents were with us on this trip and it was the first time they had been back to Germany since. One of the highlights of the trip was finding the small house my parents rented while they lived there. The family that owned the house and lived in the downstairs portion was still living at the same location 35 years later. Their daughter, who was born two months after me, was living in the house my parents had rented. After our short visit we made our way to Munich. One of the smartest things we did was to get a hotel within stumbling distance of the Oktoberfest grounds. It came in very handy as we hopped from tent to tent drinking a beer in each, of course. One final word of advice – if you are going to go on the rides, you might want to do so before you start drinking.
