Travel Photo of the Day 9-13-2011

Balmaceda Glacier – Chile

Tucked in the fjords of southern Chile is the Balmaceda glacier. On our cruise around Cape Horn, a visit to the glacier was not on the itinerary. But due to high winds when made our port of call in Punta Arenas, we were unable to tender to shore. So we departed early and made our way through the Straights of Magellan. To make up for the lost port of call, the captain told us he was going to make a stop at one of the glaciers. What he didn’t tell us was that he was going to take this big cruise ship into the middle of the glaciers icefield so that we would have great close-up views and photo ops.
