Travel Photo of the Day 8-30-2011

St. Isaac’s Cathedral – St. Petersburg, Russia

The golden dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral can be seen from miles away. The dome rises 331 feet and is plated with 220 lbs of pure gold. The church was completed in 1858. The bas-relief above the entrance is “The Adoration of the Magi” by the artist Ivan Vitali which depicts Mary and Jesus surrounded by the kings of Mesopotamia and Ethiopia. If you look closely you can see people walking around the exterior kolonnada of the dome. From the kolonnada we had great views of the city and the River Neva.

  1. I would love to go to Russia. My dad went there to climb a mountain and said it was amazing. I’ve heard it is fascinating!
