Travel Photo of the Day 8-27-2011

Queenstown, New Zealand

Hop on the Skyline Gondola for fantastic views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. If the ride up on the gondola is a little too tame for you, then you can always take the luge run on your way back down. If you are an adrenaline junkie, then Queenstown is the place for you. You can bungy jump from the Kawarau Bridge, the world’s first bungy site, or one of the other half-dozen sites, or heli-bungee. For a little variation on the bungy you can try the Shotover Canyon Swing, the worlds highest rope swing, or the Ledge Sky Swing, where you go into a free fall (in a harness) before soaring through the air in a huge arc. You can also skydive, hang-glide or how about Zorbing your way down the hill (rolling downhill inside a big plastic ball). Of course there are winter sports like skiing and you can do a little glacier walking. If you like water sports, there is jetboating the Shotover River, coming within a few feet or the rocks and cliff walls, or white water rafting or river boarding. Queenstown is also a great place to start if you want to do some trekking in the Fiordland National Park. On our visit we had limited time for these extra adventures and were there on Christmas Eve and Day, so many of the attractions were  closed. Next trip back to New Zealand ,we will have to spend a couple of weeks on the South Island.
