Travel Photo of the Day 8-3-2011

Cathedral at Plaza de Armas, Santiago, Chile

The Cathedral on the west side of Plaza de Armas in the heart of Santiago is the fifth one built on this site. The first one was burnt to the ground shortly after it was built and the next three were destroyed by earthquakes in 1552, 1647, and 1730. This Cathedral was built in 1747 but the towers were not added until 1899. So maybe the fifth time is a charm since this one has stood the longest.
