Den Gamle By is an old town open air folk museum located in Arhus, Denmark. Unlike other Scandinavian open-air museums that focus on rural folk life, Den Gamle By recreates old Danish town life. In 1914 the museum opened as the world’s first open-air museum of its kind. The museum is a collection of 75 half-timbered houses and craft shops complete with old furnishings collected from 20 townships in all parts of the country. Some of the highlights include the Mayor’s House from 1597, the toy museum (Legetoj) and the Torvet (the main square). The town itself is the main attraction but most buildings are open for visitors. There are also re-enactors to complete the old town lifestyle.
